Flight Centre Foundation Halberg Surf Day at Sumner Beach

Disability Issues

Last Sunday I was delighted to attend the Flight Centre Foundation Halberg Surf Day at Sumner Beach. The event was hosted by the Halberg Disability Sport Foundation as part of the Flight Centre Foundation Halberg Surf programme. The 22nd of February was, and remains, an important day of remembrance for Christchurch. After attending memorial services and events in the city it was great to head to Sumner to relax and unwind with a bit of surfing fun!

As the Minister for Disability Issues  I really like the Halberg Disability Sports Foundation’s vision of “All Sports for All New Zealanders – No Exceptions.” I understand that volunteers, Flight Centre staff and local community members have received “No Exceptions Training” from the Foundation. I believe that this vision is applicable to all New Zealanders. Everyone should have the ability to engage with sport, whether it’s as a supporter, first time participant, or sports fanatic. Sports brings people together and it was just lovely to see so much fun being had by everyone.

I truly believe that with the right support, equipment and technology disabled people can achieve just as much (if not more!) than their non-disabled counterparts. I was very impressed with the equipment used at the event which meant that  everyone, regardless of mobility and agility abilities, could get into the surf and have a go!
