Opening of the new St Francis of Assisi Catholic School
It was a special occasion on Friday when I attended the opening of Saint Francis of Assisi catholic school.
After the closure of Our Lady of Fatima School and St Paul’s School, the opening of St Francis of Assisi Catholic School is an exciting development for the area.
The school opened for instruction on February 4 with an official blessing. It is a decile 8, state integrated, co-educational, primary school (Year 1-8), with a current roll of 342.
The school has been established on the site previously occupied by Our Lady of Fatima School at 370 Innes Road, Christchurch. Two additional classroom blocks have been added to the school. Building began in November 2014 and was completed in December 2015.
All classes except for the New Entrants will be taught in composite classes, to make full use of the innovative learning space.
Jo Earle was appointed as the Principal of St Francis of Assisi Catholic School at the beginning of Term 4 2015, and, like the Establishment Board, has worked extremely hard to get the school up and running within such a short time frame.
Sadly, our Bishop Barry, who died on Saturday was not able to enjoy the celebration, he was a great supporter of the school and provided sterling leadership of the Diocese particularly following the earthquakes. I extend my condolences to his family and all those who will miss him dearly.
It was wonderful to see the children, the families and the new staff in the beautiful new buildings. I wish the school all the very best for a bright an exciting future.
