DOC improving accessibility for Wheelchairs

I was delighted to hear that the Department of Conversation (DOC) is investigating how it can improve accessibility for people with mobility issues on walking tracks and trails around the country. There are already a number of accessible short tracks but special places such as our Great Walks are not currently within the reach of many with mobility issues.

In March, DOC trialled the use of an all-terrain wheelchair on the Abel Tasman Great Walk with Merle Bradley a wheelchair user with a love of tramping! News cameras accompanied her for part of the journey: see the video clip here

DOC is also working with the Halberg Disability Sport Foundation on a second trial which will involve a child and their family.
