New French bilingual school unit opens in Christchurch
Christchurch parents and students now have an amazing new opportunity with the opening of La Découverte, the French bilingual school unit. I was honoured to attend the opening of this new unit at Ao Tawhiti, Discovery campus. La Découverte is the first French-English bilingual school programme in the South Island, and will teach the New Zealand curriculum in French for three days a week, and in English for two days a week.
Bilingual and multi-cultural units such as La Découverte will add enormous value to the Christchurch community, and give parents more choice when it comes to schooling. While French programmes operate in Auckland, and Te Reo units run across New Zealand, this is the first French unit for the South Island.
La Découverte was the dream of Sonia Chaker, who has worked tirelessly over the last year to make the unit a reality.
