RE:START the name finishes but containers live on

The Re:START container mall was opened in October 2011, and originally had a lifespan of 6 to 12 months. The shops were very popular with locals and visitors alike. Generous involvement from the Crown meant that the Re:START container mall has continued until now.

In 2014 Minister Brownlee said “It’s proven so popular that we wanted to see it continue even as new permanent development ramps up in the new Retail Precinct. That’s why the Government has put up $1.27 million for the relocation, and provided land to accommodate the containers moving from the northern side of the former mall set-up.”

From the Re:START blog “The Re:START container mall brand in Christchurch will officially finish on Sunday, April 30, now that its role as a transitional space is complete, with new CBD retail spaces coming on stream.” John Suckling, chairman of Re:START the Heart Trust says “Here we are six years later and the time has come to make way for the Retail Precinct, which is rapidly taking shape”.
