Endangered eels have found a safe haven under the watchful eye of a 12-year-old schoolgirl.

Lily McRae is a huge eel fan, having learned as much as she can about the slippery creatures. She helps care for a trio near her home in Pohara in Golden Bay.

The sixth anniversary of the February 22 earthquake is a significant moment for Cantabrians and all those affected by the devastating events of that day in 2011.

Hon Nicky Wagner Associate Minster of Conservation spoke to around eighty people including community members, councillors, Fish & Game personnel and Conservation personnel at the combined DOC/Fish & Game event  to officially open a wetland area near Dargaville on Sunday 19 February 2017.

Associate Tourism Minister Nicky Wagner announced applications will open tomorrow for further funding to maintain and enhance Nga Haerenga, the New Zealand Cycle Trail.

This is the sixth round of funding through the Maintaining the Quality of Great Rides Fund, part of the Government’s $8 million investment over four years.

A significant kōhatu pounamu installation has been placed near the entrance to the Canterbury Earthquake National Memorial, Associate Minister supporting Greater Christchurch Regenetation Nicky Wagner says.
